Now it works well. - Other small things Nootka 1.4.3- Discovered memory leaks were patched- [Android] - attempt to fix random crashes There were a few reports about Nootka crashing related to audio input stack. Possible reason was removed. Nootka 1.4.2- Fixed bug that stopped pitch detection after playing a note- Under Linux, Nootka is available as AppImage It doesn't require installation and works fine even with "old" Debian Jessie. - Correctly detect default system language under Win 10 - No 1.4.2 version for Android The previous 1.4.1 is up to date there, and above changes don't affect Android version Nootka 1.4.1- Fixed issues with note range in custom levelsNootka 1.4.0- Single version for Desktop and AndroidThis version bump is mostly because of this. Now all builds go from the same branch of code. Comparing to previous stable releases there were big code refactoring, and goods of c++11 are used widely. Android versions benefited of those from very beginning, and now Nootka for all supported platforms uses it. - Melodies are more... melodic There is a new method to randomize notes in generated melodies, so melodies are more realistic and exercises are closer to real pieces. - Melody can be generated (composed) from a few selected notes There is a new option in the level creator to select custom set of notes. It could be in example pentatonic scale. If key signature range is set, select notes will be transposed into random keys.
- Improved GUI elements Due to adjustments Nootka look to mobile requirements, desktop version also got some improvements. - [Android] Added dialog for quick audio settings Android device volume keys are used to invoke dialog with audio settings. Still they can be used to adjust output volume, but this quick dialog is to manage minimal input strength for pitch detection, and, maybe first of all it can be used for tuning. If someone never try to use Nootka for tuning - it is very good in it.
- [Android] Reduced paint operations Now, Nootka works even four times faster on mobile than before. Especially when it matters painting, so all animations work light. Overloaded painting was also a reason of crashes or inaccurate pitch detection Nootka in the past (older news) Nootka 1.2.7 (1.2A.7-rc3 for Android)- Added Spanish translationThanks for Jose Luis! - improved audio data handling There is bigger buffer for incoming audio, so it can survive system delays and keep what user plays in consistency. It avoids splitting single sound for two or more notes due to audio data was broken. Also listening to played sound in loudspeakers is possible on all supported audio backends (WASAPI, PulseAudio, ALSA, ASIO, DirectSound, JACK, Core Audio), before it worked only with JACK and ASIO. - pinch gesture zooms score (Android) - touching screen stops pitch detection (Android) When user touches a screen he rather doesn't play his instrument. It saves energy and gives mobile device more CPU cycles for handling touch actions. - Fixed a few ugly bugs and also couple smaller glitches Sound input and pitch detection doesn't stop under Android without reason, in the middle of play. Also repaired starting exam with melodies from single note mode view. Deb packages updated for newest Ubuntu 16.04 and derivatives. Nootka 1.2.6 (1.2A.6 for Android)- Nootka is available through Google PlayHere she is, Thanks a lot for donations! But Download page ships it as well. - Clicking on melody note displays guitar position This small improvement allows to see where to play on a guitar a note of a melody in exercise before user started playing. In previous versions, it was possible only during corrections - after melody played with mistakes. - Better support for high resolution screens A few improvements were made to better fit Nootka window on devices with high resolution and/or with high pixel density (DPI). It affects either desktop version and Android one. Also errors of scaling were fixed. - Couple of improvements to make it more intuitive under Android There is animation to explain how to quickly start playing of a melody in a score or how to on/off pitch detection. Also level creator and settings dialogues remind about need of confirmation of changes made on them. Nootka 1.2A.5-rc1 (Android)- Workarounds for all knowing issues were foundOnly more testing on different devices is required Nootka 1.2.5 stable (recent candidate for Android)- Fixed compatibility with Qt 5.6Oldest version will not work properly with newest Qt 5.6, so it is important fix when it is built with this Qt version - Added new levels To increase functionality and to demonstrate how levels can be configured there are new levels with grand staff and bass clef. - Added donors list To say TANKS those peoples the page of donors was added to About dialog. - other bug fixes Nootka 1.2A.4-beta2 (Android)- exam file can be sent directly through Android native services- improved main menu - bug fixes Knowing issues:
Nootka 1.2.4 stable- This version is also available for Mac OS X- reduced memory consumption of pitch detection process - other bug fixes Nootka 1.2A.3-beta1 - first Android releaseCan you imagine, now, the same code of Nootka can be run on Android devices. This is a magic of Qt - the framework Nootka is built with. All Nootka functionality were ported (except analyzing results) but it needs testing and polishing. Before it will be available through Google Play (next release) it can be downloaded and installed manually (installing process will ask for permission)
- Touch interface Write musical score with one finger, select guitar position with a finger on small phone screen or practice with Nootka with one finger - all touch interface is ready. (anyway, play guitar with all fingers of your hands)
- Menu Nootka is reach with options and all of them were ported similar to Android behavior. There is menu button in the corner to display options but when finger starts moving from that point - some quick accessible buttons appears to start playing or pitch detecting with one swype gesture.
- New audio framework RtAudio used on desktops is not supported under mobile systems, so another solution has to be used. But pitch detection works pretty well on smartphones or tablets, sometimes even better than on desktop. You may put a device on your lap, there is no noise of fan, Nootka hears exactly what you are playing. Nootka 1.2.3 stable version- During exams - don't run pitch detection after settings dialog was closed- Fixed layout of exam results when note name is visible - Additional staff lines are hiding properly - Fixed conditions when 'correct' tool button is displayed - Questioned note and corrected one might have distorted colors - fixed Nootka 1.2.2 stable version- Updated Russian translation- Fixed other translations - Fixed bug causing crash Nootka 1.2.1 stable version- Fixed some bugsNootka 1.2 stable version- Improved displaying accidentals and neutralsAs long as rhythms will not be implemented Nootka score is not yet real score, but those changes made Nootka closer to reality. - More documentation More documentation is available on the site and Nootka has quick links to it depends on context. - Again, fixed many bugs and glitches Nootka 1.1.7 - (rc2 of 1.2 final version)- JACK & ASIOMany instruments have ASIO drivers, so ASIO support was tested well. Also when one wants to listen to his instrument through speakers than ASIO or JACK are necessary. They may work with low latency and it was tested with Nootka, fixed and improved. - Deb package fixes Debian packages available on the site have fixed dependencies. At last Ubuntu 14.04 is required or Debian Jessie. - Fixed many bugs and glitches Nootka 1.1.6 - (rc1 of 1.2 final version)- Pitch detection improvementsPitch detection is the foundation of Nootka. She is deaf without it. So now, playing of question melodies is smooth and application can hear exactly what was played. (Still, Nootka is not able to guess what was intended to play but reading minds is out of road map). - Additional options for the detection Splitting notes when volume rises - under-laying pitch detection engine was not able to detect the same sound, quickly repeated - They were recognized as single, continuous note. With splitting, Nootka is able to do that. Also there were cases when played open string, fading out generated a harmonic note. It can be avoided with skip stiller than option. - Improved multiple audio devices support Audio input and output work separately, to avid syncroinze issues when audio devices are different. Input to output forwarding with mixed devices is still possible but it work properly with Windows ASIO and Linux JACK. In other words: If there are two sound cards used - one for input and other for output, forwarding input to output is not recommendet with ALSA, PulseAudio under Linux and WASAPI under Windows. - Polishing and fixing So many new features give possibility to commit many new mistakes... But they were fixed. Nootka seems to work robust now. Maybe even more robust than previous stable 1.0.1 version... Nootka 1.1.5 - beta- MelodiesIn short, from now Nootka is able to play melodies and it also can recognize them. But to achieve that, new score 'editor' had to be created. Adding new notes, accidentals, changing key signature - all works for whole score with multiple staves. Only rhythms are not supported yet. There is a 'record mode' when you can play on your instrument and detected notes are written into a score. - Play a score This main sentence got more concrete meaning with this version. The subject of an exam or an exercise can be a piece of score you have to play. Improving a sight reading of musical notation is more possible now. - Pitch detection improvements Two pitch detection methods of previous versions were merged to single, two steps algorithm. When played sound is long enough and loud enough note is displayed. With default setting is takes less than 100ms. When note fades out or a new sound starts, information about previous note is updated. It works fine with mic. There are three new options related to Tartini pitch detection engine. They may improve (or worsen) detection accuracy. - Balanced questioning Questions are still randomized but the application takes care to ask every type of question similar number of times. If there is range of key signatures from C-major to E-major and 40 questions are asked then every key signature appears 8 times but still in random order. The same thing with note range or fret range. - User interface The score required more room and it is the most important component. So there is an option to hide other GUI elements and to see score only. Just like a paper sheet. Also many other GUI elements were improved. - ported to Qt5 Maybe for end user it means nothing but Qt5 is a present and a future of many applications and desktop environments and Nootka among them. Now it is easy to port it to Android (attempts were made) and other mobile platforms. Nootka 1.0.1 - bug fixes release- German translation was completed- Fixed JACK related crash Nootka 1.0.0 - final release- A lot of small fixes- Changes related to installing/packaging Nootka 0.9.7-rc3- Added German translation- A lot of other small fixes Nootka 0.9.6-rc2- Fixed cooperation with PulseAudioDue to bug, Nootka with PulseAudio took high CPU usage - it was fixed. - A few other small fixes Nootka 0.9.5-rc1- Exercises modeThere is another mode of learning. Now Nootka can be friendly and understanding teacher. There is no elapsing time during exercises and when you make mistake the application can show you correct answer. Exercise will prepare you to pass an exam. - Nootka certificates When you pass an exam you will be awarded with a certificate. You can save it for remembrance. Maybe now it is valueless, but who knows, in close or far future it could give you extra points in some exams to University or Musical Academy or just better marks on music lessons, not to mention about improved skills when you pass. - Checking intonation You can check accuracy of intonation and it will be detected during exercises or exams. The program warns when you are out of tune. - Increased transposition range Base frequency of middle a which affects either pitch detection and sound output can be changed in range of octave up or down. Nootka can be used for transposing instrument as such as clarinet, trumpet, saxophone and so. - Extended support for instrument different than guitars Guitar can be hidden and you can practice without it. With configurable transposition, clefs and instrument scale you can adjust Nootka to instrument you play. - Audio input settings dialog enhancement This is hard part with many useful options. It is divided on sections now and well described so sound input should be easier to configure. - Level preview and management improved There are many windows where it appears, and information about exam/exercise level are more neat now. Also an option to remove level from a list was added and even deleting it from a hard drive is possible from there. - Finish exam without confirm There is new option in exam settings now. When checked, Nootka can be closed without any pop-upping windows. Question, if not answered, will be marked as wrong and exam file, if not set, will be automatically put in recent exam directory or in home path. - English translation corrected and improved Thanks for Luster a coefficient on English in English was maximally increased. There are no more Polish in English or Dutch and Chinese in English. - Crossing of played notes is fluent When you are clicking intensively on a score and notes are played one by one (or one over another) there is no cracks. It sounds smoothly. - Many bug-fixes Fixed pitch detection for basses and other audio issues and etc... Nootka 0.8.95-beta- Russian translation addedThanks to Sergei Ivanov Nootka speaks Russian - Electric and bass guitar audio output Nootka has samples of that instruments inside. It plays with their natural sound in scale of that instruments. Beyond the scale it generates appropriate pitch digitally in the flay. - pitch detection improved Minimal duration of detecting note can be configured. In a middle range of notes, Nootka can detect a note after 60 ms. Unfortunately it could be not played note but some string noise or just beginning of our sound with dropped intonation. Increasing the duration can avoid this but too long duration slows reaction of the application. - Fixed random crashes under some Windows versions It was related to audio stack, which throws exception about locked DirectSound stream - Many, many fixes and small improvements This version was tested quite a lot. It works robustly. Nootka 0.8.89-prebeta- A firstnewis that news are more verbose.... - Score widget was written from scratch It uses much better what Qt is offering and gives clear field for further changes. Also the changes described below were possible exactly because of it. - Added support for clefs and piano staff The next mentioned change explains why bass clef was added, but piano staff for guitar... For what? So imagine, some classical singer in desperation brought to you scores of some song with accompaniment on grand stave and there is no time for practice... Will you ready? Also this feature makes Nootka more usable for non guitarists. - Support for bass guitar It works fine but it is also a reason why not 'full beta' version is released now. Some extra polishing is necessary with this. You also can help with this. - Extended pitch detection range It was required to make Nootka capable of hearing the low notes of bass. There are three ranges available through the settings->sound but in case of changeing an instrument it is adjusted automatically. - Default settings can be easy restored There is appropriate button in settings window. It is possible to reset only part of parameters or call the application as if first time. - and more... GUI layout is more flexible, pixmaps of score snippets are smooth and scalable, there are more clues about score elements... I not quite sure is it all, there were more than 200 code commits... Nootka in the future (road map) Nootka Two will have two notes (and more)1.4.X stable- bugfixes releases1.5.X alpha/beta - 1.6.X stable- rhythms- reading notes (melodies) from MusicXml files - managing melodies in levels, adding set of melodies to the level - support for other instruments (saxophone, piano, violin and so) - dialog to configure generated melody and its rhythms - sophisticated and configurable algorithm to generate random melodies - settings for keyboard shortcuts - Note Name with support for typing names - option for changing melody key (transposition) - in a level key range as well - intervals: creating melody with set of available intervals only - intervals: questions related to them in exam/exercises ...- chords- comparing exams (charts) - recognizing melodies from *.ogg and *.wav files - preview of questions in levels - support for (octavation marks) - octave drop/rise (8-va, 15-va) |
